UBC Summer Music & English Institute 2008

The UBC Summer Music and English Institute 2008 (UBC SMEI 2008) will be held from Saturday July 12 to July 26, 2008. .

Target Participants - UBC SMEI 2008 is specially designed for students age 8 - 17 with at least, but not essential, one-year instrumental playing experience who we believe will be benefited most from the Institute. (for Matured Players, who possess advanced playing skills, please contact our Institute Director, Mr. Ringo Chan, at 3520 2628 for specially designed, professional level music programs). All the applications will be screened by both Institute Director and Director for Asian Region of the Institute on individual basis so that they can be assigned to the most suitable sectional groups of either junior, intermediate or senior concert band/orchestra.

Outcomes - Through completing the UBC SMEI program, we are confident that participating students will make the best use of their summer vacation, balancing learning with time to play. They will enhance their skills in playing musical instruments and their ability to understand and use of English. We also encourage participating students to study, play and live together, which provides the best opportunity for students to develop their interpersonal skills, communication skills, and independence. These skills are critical to personal development, and will surely benefit our students for life. A Certificate of Attendance issued by the UBC School of Music will be issued on successful completion of the course.

Tour Highlights - English on the "Green"  -  Quality English As A Second Language Programme (ESL)
The study of English will, for the first time, be held outdoors on both the beautiful, green and refreshing UBC campus and via various famous tourist sites. Interactive activities to encourage students to speak and write in English will form the core of training approach. Our instructors are qualified ESL instructors in Vancouver who have equipped with years of experiences in teaching Asian students with English as their second language.

In addition, all music classes and instructions will be conducted by native English speakers who are instructors and/or professors of UBC School of Music and musicians from the Vancouver musical community. We therefore expect that participated students will be fully immersed in a purely English environment in which the use of English as an communication tool is mandatory. Hence, increase their confidence in using English as a mean of communication and daily necessity.

Guardian Policy - It is a policy of the University of British Columbia that all students, regardless of age, will not ever be left unattended. The university and the administration of the institute have appointed a sufficient number of professional counselors and group leaders to accompany students to all events, classes, and walking between dormitory and the music building. A total of approximately 80 staffs made up of faculty, participated professional musicians and educators and both undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Music will be responsible for the safety of all students.

UBC 夏季音樂英語學院 2008

世界著名學府加拿大英屬哥倫比亞大學 (UBC) 音樂學院舉辦的 2008夏季音樂英語學院 (UBC Summer Music English Institute) 是個大型暑期音樂英語訓練營。自1992年起成立至今每年取錄約400位來自香港、加拿大各省份及 亞洲各國等地學員，一起參與為期二星期的管弦樂及英語寫作會話訓練課程，讓不同文化背景的青少年聚首一堂，分享對音樂的熱誠及群體生活上的樂趣。

此計劃課程由UBC音樂學院策劃，並邀請到超過80位來自UBC音樂學院教授、客席講師、器樂導師、溫哥華交響樂團(Vancouver Symphony Orchestra) 樂手及溫哥華著名爵士樂手主持任教。當中包括UBC交響管樂團總監 馬田•巴倫邦教授、夏威夷大學管弦樂總監 格蘭•奧卡梅立教授、著名加拿大爵士樂教育家夏拉教授等。有關導師名單及介紹，請參閱導師表。
